Hey Sovereign Family π
You've spent hours (maybe days) drafting motions, organizing evidence, writing declarations⦠but once you're standing in front of the judge, what actually lands?
From my own courtroom experience and what I've heard from many other pro se parents, it's rarely the most polished document or the most passionate speech.
Judges notice something quieter and more powerful: your presence.
In family court, judges are often juggling 20β40 cases a day on a packed calendar. They have limited time to dig through every detail. When a parent shows up calm, organized, and respectful, it makes their job easier β and that matters.
A personal note from my own early pro se days
When I first started representing myself, I was determined but still learning how to stay regulated under pressure. Emotions sometimes clouded my thinking in the moment, making it hard to communicate clearly and concisely. I could see how those moments β even when the judge gave me grace β slowed the process. That experience taught me why showing up grounded and steady matters so much. A regulated nervous system doesnβt just feel better β it helps you advocate more effectively for your child.
Hereβs what stands out most to judges (and why it matters):
Court Etiquette & Respect
Saying βYour Honor,β standing when they enter, waiting your turn to speak, not interrupting.
Why it lands: Judges deal with chaos all day. Basic respect signals that you understand the seriousness of the process and creates a calm container for the hearing.Being Prepared to Answer Questions Clearly
When the judge asks something unexpected, responding thoughtfully β even if itβs βIβm not sure, Your Honor, may I clarify?β β instead of rambling or getting defensive.
Why it lands: Busy calendars mean judges need quick, clear answers to move efficiently. A pro se parent who stays on topic helps them gather the information they need.
